Ink Pens, Abstracts, and the End of All Things (mainly art class)

Monday was the last day of art class, and I have but one thing to say to you all:

FREEEEEEEEEEEEDOM.

*wild screeching*

*energetic fist-pumping*

*crazed cackling*

*flips the table*

c1

I get to paint what I want now. No more modern art. No more mutilated-looking fish. Nothing but a blank canvas and the prospect of as many LotR masterpieces as I want.

It’s lovely.

Now I know I’ve had many things to say about this class, most of which are derogatory, but when it comes right down to it, it wasn’t all bad. Barring Paul Klee and his horrid modern style (no offense to modern art lovers, but I will NEVER understand the stuff), I learned quite a bit. (Including essay-writing, but that’s a tale for another time.) There definitely wasn’t enough portrait painting, which is my one true love in art, but… eh well. I obviously survived despite it, so that’s a plus.

And HEY. I’ve discovered the merit of INK DRAWINGS. And my life has been a fuller and more purposeful thing because of it. May I present to you… *draws curtain with a flourish* My new children. *gestures wildly below*

ink

Ain’t they beautiful? Their names are Harry, Larry, Gary, Jerry, Perry, and Barry. I love them.

Anyway. Let’s have an art dump, shall we?

Kylo Ren

Naturally, the first thing I drew with my new ink pens was Kylo Ren, because… reasons. I shall refrain from reciting some insipid quote about the Force.

DSC_0073 (1)

Still refraining.

(And seriously, WHY did I do this on lined paper? For being such a genius, I can do some pretty dumb things sometimes.)

ink

The blue stuff isn’t ink, just so we’re clear. But the sword is.

The Force

Look, I’ve had Star Wars on my mind a lot, okay?

(If I was a high-falutin’ calligraphy expert like half my friends, you would be seeing some pretty penmanship on that thing. However, I am NOT a high-falutin’ calligraphy expert, so… you get my crooked, boring hand-writing. Get over it.)

ink

Some sort of curtainy thing with a door behind it.

*and a point goes to Sarah for her stellar captioning skills*

Okay. This little horror was done on FABRIC in memory of Paul Klee, who did that sort of thing for some inexplicable (and probably stupid) reason.

(I really need to stop throwing shade at that poor guy.)

Do you all remember my last attempt at fabric painting? After that incident, I thought this boat-thing was quite a step up. So I brought it home from class, infinitely pleased with myself, and showed it to my family. Anna said (and I quote)…

“Wow, Sarah, that’s pretty horrible.”

aa1

If you are the kind of person that never takes anything personally, like myself, DON’T TELL ANYONE. Particularly blunt INFPs. They will take advantage of it.

ink

This, my friends, is the last piece of modern art I will ever have to do. Ever. And it’s actually not too shabby, if I do say so myself. I was quite pleased with it. Even Anna acquiesced to pay it a compliment, so I must have done SOMETHING write.

(Write. Why did I type that? I’m starting to become a pathetic writer person who can’t get the subject out of her head even when she’s spewing about a topic COMPLETELY removed from it. Someone, please help.)

ink.jpg

This creepy looking dude is a random character from a random story. (As vague and uninformative as that is.) I made his chin 0.0003ths of a millimeter off-center, and it’s driving me crazy.

So anyway. That’s how productive I’ve been on the art front of late. Not very impressive, I know. Oh well. I am no longer restrained by the bonds of a class telling me what to do, so…

I CAN DO WHAT I WANT!!!

Have a good weekend.

~Sarah

  1. *flat stare*
*chooses not to respond to the calligraphy jab*

Girl, you could, like, illustrate your own books or something. Seriously. AND THE STAR WARS STUFF. *GINORMOUS FANGIRL MOMENT(accompanied by flailing)*
Seriously though. I might just commission you to do portraits of all my characters or something.
And for what it’s worth, I really love the last one. It’s so… flowy.

    1. SECOND TO LAST, I MEAN. The tree thing. Yeah.
The last one is awesome too, but it’s not quite what I’d call… flowy. XD

      1. Well, illustrating my own book IS sort of the goal, so… *mysterious eyebrows* YOU NEVER KNOW. (And I might just do portraits of all your characters just because I can’t resist… *even more mysterious eyebrows* It happens sometimes when I read stuff.)

Yeah… that last one is many things, but /flowy/ is DEFINITELY not one of them. 😂

        1. XD I misspoke, okay?
And I’ll be a nice human and let you know you don’t HAVE to do portraits (even though I’m dying to see how you would interpret them, after the magic you did with Dallan last year… 😛 ). But you don’t have to. Because I’m nice.

  2. I love this! That includes your art, the ratio of Star Wars related things to non Star Wars related things, the beautiful ink pens (I have several of my own, and they are all very dear to me), the snarky comments scattered through the post as usual, and the advice to never tell INFPs if you don’t take things personally. Also, I now wish I could commission you in real life, like pay you and stuff, so I could have art by you. I kid you not, I would do that.

    1. I… this is very encouraging, actually. Thank you. I was actually considering starting some sort of art exchange thing sometime in the future, like, do an art commission or something if they share my blog on their platform or… something. It’s a very rough idea, still in the birthing stages, so I dunno. What do you think?

      Like

      1. Ooh! I think that could work as long as what they have to give you in exchange is equal (in your eyes) to the effort of the piece of art they want.

  3. Your talent for art blows me away. I have no talent myself in this direction (read: not even close, cannot do more than draw a decent cube), so I’m always extra impressed by someone who can.

Furthermore, your art actually LOOKS like something; I’m not left guessing.

My favorites are your LOTR portraits as of so far. Actually, the modern-art-ish tree I like quite a lot. I mean, it basically looks like an unusually colorful tree (and a lovely one at that), not a bunch of obscure blobs that could have been part of a biology microscope experiment for all I can tell what they are. (Which is my usual impression of modern art.)

Seeing all of this really makes me wish I could draw. If I had to pick one talent that I don’t have at all, it would be the ability to draw, because I think it would really help me as a writer. (Visualizing what I’m talking about is super useful.) As this is impossible, the next best thing is knowing someone else who CAN draw!

May your ink flow ever more beautifully as you dip it into creation’s well.

    1. Cubes are cool. *firm nod*

That is honestly the BEST description of modern art. It… it DOES look like a biology experiment. 😂 (albeit one that went wrong…)

Aaaaaand I’ll tell you a secret because you like the LotR portraits… *hunkers down and whispers in your ear* I’ll probably be starting on a whole series of LotR themed pictures, once I finish something else I’m painting for a friend. So yeah. Stay tuned.

      1. I stand by the fact that the LoTR portrait gallery was MY idea….MINE…my own! I think Frodo said something like that. Didn’t he…? 🤔

        Like

      2. All our biology experiments go wrong. Without fail. The most recent one had a sentence, and I quote: “[whatever they were talking about] should look like a brick.”

Uhhhhhh. Since when has anything under a microscope looked like a brick? What we saw looked more like a web spun by a disoriented spider with eyesight problems. It had “brick” written ALL OVER it.

Yay! *whispers back* I will definitely stay tuned. Especially since your posts keep showing up in my inbox. XD

  4. Wow, this is all really awesome!!! I especially like the second-last one. It all flows together so beautifully. Also, the last one. It’s sooo good! I really wish I could draw my characters… it would be so much nicer than spending hours looking through Pinterest. And I feel you with the off-center chin XD I cannot stand it if something isn’t completely symmetrical, unless it isn’t supposed to be xD I rhink that may be the main reason I don’t do art… it drives me crazy xD

    Like

    1. Yeah, it sort of drives me crazy too… (As was demonstrated…) *groans* Oh the horrors of being a perfectionist… Anyway, thanks for reading! (And looking. And complimenting. And all that stuff. 😉 )

  5. I decided yesterday, that if you did not post today, I would be sad. But you did post, so I am happy. Have some ice cream 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦.
Hoooraaayyy for finishing art class. That must feel wonderful. Have some more ice cream 🍦🍦🍦!
Ooh, art dump! (Oh, and the pens are awesome…I love that type.)
That sword is so. gorgeous. I love it!!! And I want one…
I totally get you on the off-center chin. I’m not a perfectionist, but when I’m drawing, I will draw and redraw a single line so many times, because I just can’t get it the way I want it. Then I get frustrated with myself, because I’m so inept. So, I never draw.
Awesome art! I like all of it, even the modern ship thingy. It’s cool!

    Like

    1. ICE CREAM!! *eats it all* Thank you kindly, dear lady, for the most generous words (and food).

BUT WAIT!!! Don’t put away drawing because you can’t get the lines right!! I actually discovered a couple weeks ago that the drawings I just… roll with… actually turn out better than the ones I labor over to be perfect. So a line is crooked. Big deal. It’s a lot less stressful (not to mention it makes it so I don’t take a week drawing three lines), and the finished product is always nicer than the perfectionistic ones.

(There’s your Sarah Baran word of wisdom for the day. You’re welcome. 😉 )

      1. Well, that’s definitely a good point. Maybe I will get my sketch book out again sometime. When I decided not to be lazy 😜. Thank you for your words of wisdom my friend.

  6. Um… so your star wars art is my new reason for living. so i’d like more of those in the future please. thanks.
i could never understand modern art either. one of my favorite memories is going to an art museum and standing around with three of my friends trying to figure out what a particular piece of art was supposed to BE. after 20 minutes of speculation, we came up with no conclusion. that was when i knew modern art and I would never be friends.
and i thought your fabric painting was good, for what it’s worth.

    1. THANK YOU. If you can’t tell what the picture is after half an hour of looking, then it obviously can’t be important. (Or SHOULDN’T be important…) I personally think some talentless person was just trying to get rich quick. But that’s just a theory. 😉
(And believe me, there will probably be WAY more Star Wars art in the future. My sister will demand it of me, if I don’t demand it of myself first.)

  7. Gaaahhh I love them all so MUCH! (Except for the curtainy thing, which I didn’t…really…like. BUT, it has excellent composition, so I’ll give it that.) It’s beautiful how many different styles you can do. Concept art (HUGE plus), portraits, modern-weirdos some of which actually look cool, your own book stuff, and fake-ish animated looking stuff and also lots of realistic stuff… *dreamy sigh* Yeah. Must be pretty convenient too. ;P

Congratulations on being freed from the bonds of art class (does that mean no more co-op at all? *gasp* And does this make you happy or sad…), and I approve of your pen-naming job. XD

    Like

    1. Yeah, I wasn’t too crazy about it myself. This is why I’m glad to be out of the class.

Heh… I’m sort of an art chameleon… It’s cool. Very convenient, like you said. *nod nod* (Concept art is the most helpful though, I’ll give it that…)

Yup, this means no more co-op at all. If I had been raised in it like some kids, I probably would feel a lot worse about it than I do. As it is, I’ve only been going for three years, and I don’t even really know most of the people there. I have no deep, emotional connection to the place, I guess. So I’m fine with it.

  8. Sarah,

That creepy guy at the end actually looks a lot like one of my secret characters. And I am glad you are free. I want you to do more LOTR paintings too. I don’t get your Star Wars ones, but that’s because I haven’t watched them. I want to now, but until the prices go down (yes, my family are thrifty) the Force shall have to wait.

    1. Oh and I meant to mention that I love the names you gave your pens. I have like…a billion of those–some of them being twins–so I can’t name them. I’ll just name my first three. Hobby, Lobby and Bobby. *nods* Thank you for your inspiration.

(As a side note though, I’ll probably wait a couple weeks to do it, because I just did several recently. My sister tells me I have to wait. And she’s intimidating enough that I actually listen to her. 😉 )

I’ve never tried ink sketches but you and Christi make it look so tempting.

  10. Seriously, girl, your blog is one of my absolute favorites. The art (especially the LotR art), the sarcasm and whit, the GIFs, and best of all, all the Lord of the Rings references. When I read your comment in which you stated “THE RING IS MY BURDEN. MINE. MY OWN.”, I got all giddy with excitement and had a very nostalgic moment. *fangirls*
