Art Junk

I have a way with titles.

So this week, I did what I told myself I’d never do with this blog: I waited til the day before to write the post. Only a month into this thing, and I’m already acting characteristically like myself.

The long and short of it is, I wasn’t able to finish the post in time, so that will be the main attraction of next week, and today I’m just going to dump a bunch of my recent art on you.

I tried to scan my drawings into the computer, so that they’d show up clearer than if I took a picture, but after poking and prodding the printer for what seemed like an age, Anna couldn’t figure out how it worked. And, people, let me tell you something: If Anna can’t figure it out, ain’t nobody gonna.

So I had to resort to picture taking. But the good news is that I’ve had this really expensive Nikon camera hanging around the house for probably a month, gathering dust. If I had been using it as much as I should have, I would have know that those things can take really good pictures, but alas, I have been terribly unfaithful to it. But today I learned, once again, the kind of quality Nikon gives. Anyway, on to the specimens.

(And just so you know, I originally called it a Canon, and only realized in the second draft of this post that wait, I have a Nikon, not a Canon. I really do need to spend more time with that thing…)

Here is a self portrait of myself (because that’s what self portraits are).

Here’s something I did to combat the daze Rogue One put me in. (Seriously, people, I walked around the house like a zombie for a week after I saw that movie.) Please forgive my rendition of K-2SO. It took me five days to do this drawing, and by the end, I was so sick of it I just wanted to be DONE. K2 suffered because of that…

Here’s a fun one I had to do for drawing class. The homework assignment was to pick one of the pictures the teacher provided us with and draw it in charcoal. While everyone else chose farms or sailboats or other such monotonies, my eye was instantly drawn to this one for the dramatic choice it presents:

To throw up, or throw oneself overboard? That is the question.

Here’s a random character that Anna tells me looks like a buccaneer princess.

This is a character drawing I did for a friend. (I am aware that this picture is kind of bad quality. Nikon failed me.)

Another character drawing for the same friend.

And last, because the best should always come last, is this one. It’s another drawing class project. Mrs. Howard told us to do a simplistic drawing of our relationship with God.

*crickets*

But, upon closer thought, I realized that yes, I can do this.

I think I scared most of my classmates to death. But the thing is, I didn’t want my picture to be that typical, God hugging his children type thing. I know that some people have that kind of relationship with Him, but it’s my opinion that it takes many, many years of being a Christian to achieve that. Instead, I wanted to depict the fire and the pain that my walk with God has been, the desperate struggle to find Him in the darkness of life. The crawling on my knees amidst the flames, clinging to the smallest whisper of Him for dear life.

And the good news is that He’s always been there, standing over me, urging me to trust Him, even though most of the time I didn’t realize it. I hope I managed to captured that in my drawing.

Whew. That was deep.

Oh, and one more little thing before I release you to go do whatever it is you do on Saturdays: I have my first drawing commission! Good old Mrs. Howard arranged it all. Basically, someone wants a portrait done, and they’re going to PAY ME TO DO IT. Mind you, probably only three bucks, but still, it’s a start. I’m muchly excited.

Goodbye now.

And I just realized I should probably be signing my name at the end of these posts, so here you go.

  1. Aaahhh, can you really be my sister!?! Where did all that talent and humor come from? Great job! – ends sappy gushing:)

  2. Another awesome post Sarah. And great job with the charcoal! (I am convinced charcoal is one of the hardest mediums to draw details with. My art teacher made us draw a still life with charcoal, and I almost died).

    1. Agh, isn’t it awful? I hate charcoal. You can’t erase it! (Part of the reason I included that charcoal drawing in here is because I was so proud that it didn’t turn out looking like a bunch of scribbles and half-erased lines…)

  3. These are lovely. 😀 I especially like the Rogue One art— LOVE THAT MOVIE AND I HAD THE SAME REACTION.
And the last one is beautiful. That definitely speaks more to me personally than the usual lambs and shepherds, etc. Good job. I love it.

  4. How is it even possible for someone to draw so well. 😮
Especially that Rogue One one!!!!! Good gravy. (I sympathize about your condition after seeing the movie. I mean, I didn’t walk around like a zombie, but I totally get the feel.)
Sheesh girl, you oughtta be paid well for that portrait. Unless it turns out badly, but at this point I think that’s an impossibilty.
Btw, I knew exactly what your last one meant before you explained it. You captured it.

    1. Your faith in how how the portrait will turn out warms my heart. XD
But isn’t the GALADRIEL one GREAT? Don’t you think that she IS THE BEST LOTR CHARACTER EVER??? *poke* *POKE* 😉

      1. Sorry, that’s my brain being mean to you. Once I hear something, I forget that other people probably don’t remember it as long as I do. 🙂 You once said that Galadriel (the character) wasn’t…wow for you. My brain forgot that that was about four days ago and you have probably totally forgotten. So…just…never mind. I can’t remember the relevance of my comment anymore.

*Jedi mind tricks you* Galadriel is wow for you. 😀

        1. NOOOOOOOOO! I have a wonderful memory and I knew exactly what you were referencing. *groan* I hate it when my flat sarcasm doesn’t work.
That picture is not Galadriel! It’s a self portrait of yourself. I did notice it looked like Galadriel, but really, who am I to doubt your word?

*shakes head* I do apologize. 😛

Well, I like Galadriel better than Grima, but… 😉

        2. Ah well, you rest assured now—I have a very good memory, and wouldn’t forget something, especially a conversation with a FRIEND, that happened merely 4 DAYS AGO! Sheesh. Give me a little more credit than that. I remember obscure details from letters I wrote years ago.

You’re right. There isn’t. *goes meekly to room*
(And yet—there are still half a dozen or more other characters I like better than her.)

Anyway, that drawing, whoever it was, is incredible. *crazed nod*

      2. Well now I just feel dumb. XD The person who has sarcasm in her name didn’t get it. *head desk*

There is no comparison between the two G’s, Emma! NO. COMPARISON. Go to your room.

    1. Huh. I have NO idea what’s up with that. I tried changing it, but it didn’t work. Oops.
And hey, 4 days is a long time! The world was almost done being CREATED in 4 days.

And I like Supreme Dictator. Let’s keep that one, shall we? 😀

      1. Too bad. We can still keep Supreme Dictator. 😀

That is an astute observation. But God happens to have a way with Time. *chokes* Four days for me is normal.

        😀

  5. Love your “self-portrait.” 😛 And the charcoal one is amazing. I need to draw more. *sighs wistfully while looking at the piles of school books* But summer is coming!!! 🙂
